NORTEL

We’re Still No. 1 in Carrier VoIP

Nortel Networks might be struggling with a high-profile bankruptcy, but it knows what it’s good at. And one of those things is carrier VoIP, where it still holds a top position in the market. The vendor is accordingly releasing several application upgrades for its flagship carrier VoIP platforms.

The press release touted the positives, even using the “l” word—as in “lucrative”: “Nortel’s carrier applications are some of the most progressive offering in the market. We hold the number one position in market share in carrier VoIP technology. These products are making up a lucrative part of Nortel’s carrier portfolio, as we continue to deliver new features and solutions to market.”

The upgrades are available for the CS2000 and CS1500 platforms, and Nortel also said its Adaptive Applications Engine is customer-ready and is has been selected and shipped to “leading, Tier 1 service providers in EMEA and CALA.”

The CS2000 platform now supports fixed-mobile convergence applications that carriers can use to target business users interested in turning their mobile phone into another office extension. It also allows telcos to leverage voice over Wi-Fi for a cellular/Wi-Fi service enabled on a dual-mode handset.

Another addition is SIP PBX trunking, so corporate voice and data can flow together over one pipe – eliminating the need for multiple networks and lessening the cost of unified communications.

Meanwhile the CS1500 platform for rural and regional carriers now supports unified messaging for voice-to-e-mail services, along with Web self-service for end users. And for carriers targeting SMBs, the platform now includes on-demand conferencing for rural businesses.

As for the Adaptive Applications Engine, this lets carriers add voice and multimedia capabilities to existing service offerings, integrating federated instant messaging, click-to-call services from the Web, or integration of multimedia conferencing into VoIP services to go after the Voice 2.0 market.
