How SIP Works

Technically Speaking...but not too technical

SIP utilizes Session Initiation Protocol (“SIP”), an Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standard protocol (RFC3261) for initiating realtime multimedia communications such as Internet telephony calls, video, chat and gaming applications.

Currently, perhaps the most compelling application for the use of SIP is in its potential to offer PSTN-like calling capabilities, but at much higher speeds and with the opportunity to deliver far greater services.

SIP Trunks are virtual circuits delivered over a broadband connection. They replace traditional Primary Rate Interface (“PRI”) or analog circuits while maintaining the same service quality that businesses have come to expect. It is important to know that when a SIP Trunk is not in use, the available bandwidth is usable in less intensive applications such as email and general web use. This Dynamic IT allocation of bandwidth is a primary driver optimizing network utilization and increasing cost efficiencies.
